Airport workers protest proposed concessionaires

Sacramento International Airport workers and the travel hospitality union that represents them will rally outside the airport at 1 p.m. today to protest the recommendation of four retail concessionaires for the new terminal.
Unite Here Local 49, which represents 200 concessions workers at Sacramento’s airport, objects that an airport panel is recommending four concessionaires that haven’t guaranteed that they’d hire existing airport workers for the shops that would open in the new Terminal B.
The food concessionaires that were recommended a few weeks ago have guaranteed that existing employees would be rehired for restaurants at the new terminal. None of the retail companies that were recommended on Monday, however, have made such assurances, a union news release said on Tuesday.
The union is using the rally to push for the retail workers getting the same opportunities and protections as food service workers.
The Paradies Shops, Pacific Gateway Concessions, Brookstone Company Inc., and Erwin Pearl Retail Inc. are the four companies that gained an evaluation panel’s recommendation to provide the shops for the new airport terminal opening late next year.
The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors will be asked on Nov. 9 to approve the four concessionaires for the new terminal.
One proposal that didn’t get the nod was one by Hudson News, which partnered with RSN and Associates, the current news and gifts concessions operator at Terminal A. That proposal was the only one that guaranteed a “smooth transition for the current retail workforce,” the union release said.
“We’re going to be making some noise outside the airport because right now we don’t have any guarantee that we, the current concessions workers, will get to keep our jobs when the new terminal opens,” Maria Kelly, a saleswoman for RSN and Associates, said in the release.
