Alleged airport bomb hoaxer remains in custody

HE was an alcoholic who allegedly rang through a bomb hoax at Sydney Airport about the same time he tried to order 15,000 pizzas from an Adamstown restaurant.

But Newcastle Local Court magistrate Mark Buscombe kept Peter Paul Andrew Garlick, 48, in jail last night over fears he would again try to disrupt air traffic, days after the Qantas shutdown.
”I don’t know what the protocol is but clearly it could well have resulted in a full-on investigation,” Mr Buscombe said.
”I don’t know if there is a protocol where security … decide to interfere with the normal operations of the airport.”

The court heard Mr Garlick had been jailed in South Australia this year after being convicted of committing ”certain offences on an aircraft”, although it was not revealed what had occurred.
Police were called to a phone box on Glebe Road, Adamstown, on Monday night after a triple-0 operator reported an intoxicated male had rung and said ”I’m gonna blow up Sydney Airport”.

Officers found Mr Garlick on a seat nearby and although he denied using the phone, witnesses told police they had seen him at the booth.
”Police spoke to staff at Dominos Pizza who said the accused had been in there earlier, harassing a female customer and ordering 15,000 pizzas,” a police statement of facts said.

Mr Garlick was also charged with three counts of assaulting police.
The court heard Mr Garlick had no recollection of the incidents.
He has not been required to enter a plea and will reappear in Newcastle Local Court on November 11.
