Commission accepts FAA Grant

Commission accepts FAA
grant for Silver Springs
airport

Staff Report • July 21, 2010 RGJ.com

The Lyon County Commissioners have accepted a
Federal Aviation Administration grant for a drainage
study at the Silver Springs Airport.

The recently-announced FAA grant is in the amount
of $80,750, of which Lyon County, as the sponsor,
is responsible for a 5 percent match.

This is part of the FAA’s Airport Improvement
Program, which provides grants to mostly public
agencies for the planning and development of
public-use airports.

However, Kay Bennett, SS airport co-manager, said
the Aviation Trust Fund should be able to cover the
$4,250 local match for the FAA grant.

Lyon County also received a $30,000 grant from the
Carson Water Subconservancy District and a
$15,000 matching grant from USDA Rural
Development for a Ramsey Canyon Watershed-Silver
Springs Wash Flood Control and Water Quality
Improvement Study, with the flood control portion
related to this project.

Bennett said they applied for this grant in January as
part of the airport’s capital improvement plan (CIP)
and it is part of the FAA entitlement funds the airport
receives each year (up to $150,000 per year, she
said).

This is part of the FAA’s Airport Improvement
Program, which provides grants to mostly public
agencies for the planning and development of
public-use airports.

Bennett said to the commission, “As you’re well
aware, we’re dealing with a significant flood control
drainage issue,” and this funding would help
address a significant portion of that, along with the
other grant project.

Bennett said water out of Ramsey Canyon to the
northwest comes to the airport area (part of which
was deemed by FEMA to be in the floodplain (which
affects hangar development), and then continues on
to the downtown Silver Springs area.
