Equipment mishap causes delay at airport

Smoke from an overheated piece of baggage-transfer equipment caused a 20-minute delay in the security lines at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport late Thursday.
Lambert spokesman Jeff Lea said that about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, someone saw what appeared to be smoke at the main C/D security checkpoint.
Security officers halted screening at the checkpoint, and some people had to be evacuated from the area, Lea said.
The problem was traced to a basement area where baggage is transferred, Lea said. A belt got too hot, and it was creating smoke. There was no emergency and no fire, Lea said.
