March 05–YORK, Pa. — Local travelers won’t have to find another airport for nonstop flights to Orlando when AirTran Airways stops operations at Harrisburg International Airport in August.

The Dauphin County airport struck a deal with Indianapolis-based Frontier Airlines for a new service, which will operate four days each week, according to the airport. Flights begin May 24.

“We are extremely excited about Frontier’s announcement,” said Timothy J. Edwards, executive director of the Harrisburg airport said in a statement.
This is the second new flight service this month between the airport and Frontier. Earlier this month, HIA and Frontier introduced a new nonstop service from Harrisburg to Denver, which will run three times weekly beginning May 22.
In January, AirTran, a subsidiary of Southwest Airlines, said that it would end service at six airports: HIA, Allentown, Lexington, Ky.; Sarasota, Fla.; Huntsville, Ala. and White Plains, N.Y.

It was “disappointing” for HIA, which had about 250,000 passengers use the Orlando route since late 2008, when AirTran first came to HIA, said Scott Miller, director of public relations and marketing for the Susquehanna Area Regional Airport Authority, which runs the airport, recently.

The “challenging economic environment and especially sustained high fuel prices,” were the reasons behind the service stops, said Brandy King, a spokeswoman for the airline, recently.
